Five Excursions for Piano, by William Callaway

£12.00

These five pieces are like little snapshots taken on outings to open spaces or atmospheric locations such as the fairground or old stone churches. They are short, accessible, evocative and perfect for pianists around intermediate level.

Description

William Callaway’s experience as a teacher of young people shines through in this set of miniatures, evocative and complete despite their short length. The titles of the pieces are explicit – Roundabouts, Stone Churches, Mad Horsey, Watching Gliders and The Rope Bridge – thus making each piece like a tiny piece of programme music. Pianistically they offer little challenges – but not so fearsome as to be obstacles. They have a light touch and would work well for young and old at early intermediate level.
Roundabouts:
This charming miniature features a repeating left hand pattern and simple, playful melody suggesting the movement of a roundabout. This is a late elementary / early intermediate solo. It can be performed alone or together with other Callaway miniatures as part of a self-selected suite of pieces.

Stone Churches:
Stone Churches is a meditative piano miniature with a wonderfully nostalgic tune. Slightly challenging to play as there are 10ths in the left hand accompaniment, and the two hands feature a gentle rhythmic phase of groupings of two in the right hand and three in the left hand. This is an early intermediate solo that can be performed alone or together with other Callaway miniatures as part of a self-selected suite of pieces.

Mad Horsey:

Mad Horsey is a lively minor key waltz with a colourful major key section. This piece is ideal for piano players learning hands coordination and different types of chords. This is an early intermediate solo that can be performed alone or together with other Callaway miniatures as part of a self-selected suite of pieces.
