Hot Cross Buns is a fun and engaging piano teaching resource from the Ready to Play series created and written by Sally Cathcart. It is designed to be used during a piano lesson, either as a standalone activity or to support learning from a tutor book.

Features of the song and the workbook include:

  • a seasonal Easter song;
  • do trichord (do, re, mi);
  • crotchets, quavers and crotchet rest (quarter notes, eighth notes and  quarter note rests);
  • phrase structure A, A, B, A;
  • step-by-step movement from singing to playing;
  • pupil-centred workbook, laid out for ease of learning; and
  • transposition and improvisation activity.

The workbook is ideal for beginner students who are in their first year of learning the piano, although the song itself can be adapted to work at various levels.

  1. Very easy to follow the plan ideas. The buns and pennies on the staff are a nice way to show the movement.

  2. It’s fun to teach this to the young learners.

  3. Looking forward to this adorable and clever production! It teaches in ways I love to teach. Just st about to put my St Patrick’s resources away for another year (?☘️) so on to Easter I look not only at free resources so will be shopping again. I started this contemporary teaching 7-10 yrs ago and altho the “science” of music theory does not change, it is time for me to freshen up my resources ???
    Thank you.
